- 1618 Richelieu ordered into exile for plotting with Maria de Medici
- 1620 The French nobles revolt against Louis XIII.
- 1621 The Dutch West India Company is chartered.
- 1622 The rebellion of the Huguenots ends with the Treaty of Montpellier. The Protestant Hugenots will continue to suffer in France. Richelieu recalled by Louis XIII and made cardinal
- 1624 Cardinal Richelieu is made Louis XIII's First Minister.

- 1626 Richelieu puts down the Chalais Conspiracy and concentrates all political power in his hands.
- 1633 Galileo is forced by the Inquisition to recant his heretical ideas. Rome will not admit its mistake for over 350 years.
- 1635 The French Academy is founded by Cardinal Richelieu. It is an attempt to purify from foreign influences the language and literature of France.
- 1642 Richelieu dies and his power is transferred to Cardinal Mazarin.

- 1648 The Peace of Westphalia concludeds the Thrity Years' War. Spanish power in Europe is now at an end.
- 1654 Louis XIV's coronation as King of France.
